Bexhill United followed up their stunning last-gasp victory at high-flying Haywards Heath last week with a 5-2 home triumph over Lingfield.

Lingfield arrived on Saturday sitting just above the relegation places in the Southern Combination Football League premier and are very much in the dog fight for survival in what is shaping up to be a tough battle at the wrong end of the table.

Bexhill, sitting just above mid-table, would need a footballing miracle to claw their way into the play-off positions but have still made significant progress on the pitch this season.

A clutch of missing players meant some enforced changes for the Pirates, with the returning Ryan Moir dropping in at left-back and Mardy Ovenden getting a well-deserved start in midfield.

There was plenty of action at both ends early on as both teams adapted to the conditions and Lingfield showed early signs that they would be no push overs.

A nasty clash of heads left Bexhill centre-back Callum Brand nursing a nasty gash, leaving the field for treatment. Charlie Scarles came on and Charlie Playford, who would put in one almighty shift, dropped in alongside skipper Richie Welch to plug the gap in the defence.

On 27 minutes it was the visitors who took the lead with the ever-impressive Deven Reid-Solanki getting on the end of a through ball to poke it home. It was end to end stuff and ten minutes later the scores were level after some good work by Ash Latuske and Will Saunders caused panic on the Lingfield line and their defender pushed the ball into his own net.

Bang on half-time Lingfield retook the lead when Reid-Solanki found some space and lashed the ball into the top corner for his second of the match.

Whatever happened in the Bexhill dressing room at half-time certainly did the trick and they came out attacking the favoured Brockley Road end with a renewed sense of purpose.

After a couple of minutes, a Moir corner led to penalty box pinball and on the rebound from the crossbar Charlie Curran swept the ball home to even things up.

The trigger had been pulled now, and it was all Bexhill. On 58 minutes Moir, marauding forward like a man on a mission,  belted a trademark drive in from the left and it crashed into the net off the inside of the post taking the Pirates into the lead and completing the turn around.

Skipper Richie Welch decided it was time to get in on the action and after another quality corner from Max Hollobone he was first out the blocks to squeeze the ball in at the far post. The Brockley Road massive raised their voices and pints in celebration.

Bexhill weren’t done yet and on 80 minutes Jack Shonk got his goal from another corner that eventually fell to the Pirates top scorer to smash home. That made it 5-2 and, with a few missed chances that could easily have made it more, Bexhill took the victory and the points after another extraordinary display of second-half dominance.

Bexhill are at home again with a league fixture against Roffey on Saturday.
