Tributes made to popular Bexhill community figure

THE Bexhill community is paying tribute to Stewart Willard, a much-loved local man whose warmth, quiet strength and devotion to family left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Stewart grew up in Sidley, on Buxton Drive, surrounded by a large extended family who lived closely together. Growing up in that environment shaped his deep belief in loyalty, togetherness and always showing up for those you love — values that stayed with him throughout his life.

He was fiercely proud of his wife Lynda, with whom he shared 54 years of marriage, as well as his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. If you were part of Stewart’s family, you knew it — his love was constant and unconditional.

Stewart was also well known locally for his involvement with the original Sidley BMX Track.

He helped build the track in its early days and became a familiar and trusted figure as the gatekeeper, releasing the bikes when the claxon sounded. For many local riders, he was part of their earliest memories of racing — dependable, encouraging, and always there.

Following his passing, there has been an outpouring of condolences across local social media, with many hundreds of people paying their respects, sharing memories, and retelling the funny stories that made Stewart such a well-known and well-loved figure in the community.

Among those paying tribute is his grandson, Connor Winter, now a councillor on Bexhill Town Council and Rother District Council, as well as the youngest person to be elected to those roles and the youngest Deputy Mayor in Bexhill’s history.

Connor said his grandad played a defining role in shaping the man he has become. “I grew up with my grandad,” he said. “We spent whole days together watching the news, talking about the world and laughing. He shaped how I think, how I care about people, and how I try to serve my community.”

Stewart lived a full and happy life rooted firmly in Bexhill, a town he loved and never wanted to leave. Though the world feels quieter without him, his family say it is infinitely richer for having had him in it.

Stewart Willard’s funeral will take place on Monday 26 January 2026 at 2pm at Eastbourne Crematorium. All are welcome to attend. A wake to celebrate Stewart’s life will follow at The Wheatsheaf. He is survived by his wife Lynda and a large, loving family who will continue to carry his values, spirit and example forward.

The family have requested no flowers but donations to The Dogs Trust in Stewart’s Name.
