WORK is now underway on a series of improvements designed to enhance pedestrian safety in a busy part of Bexhill.
East Sussex Highways has begun work on Sea Road, Endwell Road and Jameson Road as part of a scheme aimed at making it safer and easier for people to cross the road and move around the area on foot.
The project includes the relocation and widening of the existing zebra crossing on Sea Road, as well as carriageway resurfacing, footway reconstruction and minor drainage improvements.
Highways officials say the upgraded crossing will provide a safer and more accessible route for pedestrians, particularly children, older residents and people with disabilities.
The new crossing location has been chosen to improve visibility for both pedestrians and motorists, helping to create a safer environment for everyone using the road.
A spokesperson for East Sussex Highways said: “This scheme will make a real difference to pedestrian safety in the area by improving visibility at the crossing and creating a safer, more accessible environment for people using Sea Road.
“We know this work will cause some disruption, and we would like to thank residents, businesses and road users for their patience while these important improvements are carried out.”
Some overnight road closures will also be required later in the project to allow resurfacing and the installation of high-friction surfacing.
The improvement programme is scheduled to be completed by July 23, subject to weather conditions and any unforeseen circumstances.
Motorists are being advised to allow extra time for journeys while the works continue, while residents can follow updates from East Sussex Highways for the latest information on traffic management and road closures.
The scheme forms part of wider efforts to improve road safety and accessibility across the county, creating safer routes for pedestrians and enhancing local road infrastructure.
